Welcoming a baby into the family involves significant physical, emotional, and lifestyle adjustments. To bridge the gap between advanced clinical care providers and non-medical home support, Childress Nursing Services (CNS) proudly introduces the Family Home Nurse, part of our CNS HELPS™ (Home Evaluation and Learning Prenatal & Postpartum Service) initiative.
What is a Family Home Nurse ?
A Family Home Nurse is a licensed, highly trained nurse healthcare professional who provides comprehensive in-home skilled nursing care and education, from pregnancy through baby's first year into early childhood. Family Home Nurses empower families with culturally-appropriate, evidence-based nursing care across the 10 SocioMaternal domains—from monitoring vital signs to navigating community resources.
Why Families Choose CNS Family Home Nurses
Whole-Family Care: Comprehensive care covering maternal, infant, and non-birthing parent/partner health needs.
Home-Based Convenience: Assessments and monitoring, wound care, injections, and education occur in your home environment.
Rapid Results Labs: Point-of-care health screenings require just a small finger prick or urine sample, delivering results in minutes to quickly address any concerns.
Education and Empowerment: CNS-tailored interactive prenatal and postpartum workbooks (e.g., Building the NEST and Hatching the 1st 52 Weeks) equip families with practical guidance and personalized monitoring.
Hospital Postpartum Nurse vs. Non-Medical Doula
vs. Family Home Nurse
While all play a vital role in the perinatal period, their scope and setting varies:
Hospital Postpartum Nurse | Non-Medical Doula | Family Home Nurse
Care Setting | Hospital or clinic | Home-based care
Clinical Scope | Medical procedures, immediate postpartum care | Non-clinical emotional support and comfort measures | Clinical skilled nursing care, comprehensive assessments |
Care Duration | Short-term (birth admission ± 2 days) | Typically birth and immediate postpartum support | From prenatal through 1st year+ postpartum / postnatal |
Family Inclusion | Primarily focused on birthing parent and baby | Emotional and practical support, primarily birthing parent | Whole-family (birthing and non-birthing parents, baby) |
Provider Orders | Dependent on hospital/clinic directives | No clinical directives | Independent CNS HELPS care plan plus integration of provider-specific medical orders |
Relaunching from MommyCare to CNS HELPS™ Post-COVID
Understanding the evolving landscape of maternal healthcare, CNS HELPS™ is timely relaunched from our MommyCare postpartum service into a robust, holistic approach that addresses prenatal to postpartum needs comprehensively. With the recent 2025 demographic shift highlighting more first-time mothers over 40 years old than teen mothers (NBC News, Parents.com), CNS is perfectly positioned, already serving advanced maternal age clients in fertility treatments, and now seamlessly continuing our high excellence of care into pregnancy and postpartum/postnatal.
What Sets CNS HELPS Apart?
One of the primary aims of CNS HELPS is to reduce and eventually eliminate preventable perinatal emergency room and NICU visits, as well as readmissions, by identifying early complications and supporting families with real-time, in-home skilled nursing care—leading to significant cost savings for families, providers, and payers alike. Our prevention-first approach delivers meaningful results that lower health risks while improving outcomes for both parent and baby.
CNS CradleSafe™: Signature home safety initiative, assessing infant sleep & play environments prenatally and postnatally.
D-S.M.I.L.E.™: Daniels Screening for Maternal Mental Insight & Lifestyle Evaluation—a relatable, holistic mental health screening tool that spans the entire perinatal period, not just postpartum AND for non-birthing parents, as well!
Baby Gets Moving™: Personalized fitness and nutrition programs for optimal prenatal health and postpartum recovery.
Bridge-to-Work/Community™: Comprehensive support program easing transitions back into work and community settings.
Fetus-to-Tots Milestone Program™: Proactive developmental milestone coaching and screening, tailored to each family.
Point-of-Care Labs: Immediate result labs conducted comfortably at home.
Insurance Accessibility: In-network with over 200 health insurers, including Apple Health/Medicaid.
